Yay for Play: DIY 3 C's Play Dough

Originally published April 20, 2020
With shelter in place having no end in sight, I wanted to attempt something I don't normally do: a DIY craft. I looked up play dough recipes online only to find I had ZERO ingredients. I mean... I didn't even have regular flour! Naturally, I could have given up but I decided to get creative. I had coconut flour... I had coconut oiI... had cornstarch. From there, the 3 C's Play Dough was born!

Here are the things you need:
- 2 cups coconut flour
-4 oz melted coconut oil
-1/4 cup corn starch

Combine them all in any order in a bowl and mush them with your hands. Add extra corn starch as needed. I ended up adding roughly 2 tbsp more after kneading. You can also add food coloring if you're feeling fancy but surprise, I had none!

Afterwards, my hands felt moisturized from the coconut oil and smelled so nice. I guess that was just a bonus to the ingredients.

And yes, he did try to eat it. If you look closely, you will see the remnants of the taste he had on his face. He spit it out, not liking the texture, and proceeded to play. At least I knew what was in the dough so there was no concern over if it was safe or not.

After he had fun playing with it, I threw it in the fridge the next day thinking we could reuse it. I even ziploc bagged it before putting it in. I got a surprise the next day though when I went to check it.

IT TURNED INTO A FREAKING COCONUT ROCK!

So, while this is labeled and play dough, I'd say it is a weird play dough/clay hybrid that smells and tastes like subtle coconut. At least play dough doesn't harden when sealed but if you want to make sculptures using this recipe, you'll have success.

If you're lacking fancy things like cream of tartar (not to be confused with just tartar sauce) or even regular basic flour, give this a try. I will even go out on a limb here and say that you can swap any type of flour and oil. Coconut was nice though because the smell.

Let me know if you try it! Hopefully this inspires you to get a little creative. You never know what you can come up with using just what is in your pantry.

xoxo,
Angela
